When I lived in Philadelphia, I had the opportunity to be an artist in residence with the A2O program. Artists and Art Outside is a partnership between Philadelphia Park and Recreation and the Mural Arts Program.
I worked at Ziehler Recreation Center, where I facilitated free arts programming to foster understanding and appreciation for the environment, and focused on investigating the interactions between the natural world and our constructed urban landscape. Twice a week I worked with students across a broad age range to record the things we saw at Ziehler in nature journals we made by hand, and to work on drawing and printmaking skills and techniques. Each student chose at least one native species to feature on a lino block that was printed on pennant flags. Several bird, mammal and insect species are represented in the permanent installation in the Ziehler general purpose room.
